We build models, then make them useful.

We have deep expertise in designing, training, evaluating, and applying deep learning models — including systems for prediction, forecasting, representation, and inference.

Deep learning is one tool in a larger modelling practice that includes statistical, econometric, accounting, and domain-specific methods. We use the approach the evidence calls for.

The work does not stop at model performance. We care about uncertainty, evaluation, interpretability, deployment, and whether a system remains useful outside the lab.

How people — and models — learn.

Learning is a premier research area for us. We study how knowledge is acquired, represented, adapted, retained, and applied — with particular interest in adult learning and cognition.

That includes cognitive learning models, computational models of learning, and the relationship between human learning and machine learning. Each can sharpen questions about the other.

We welcome research partners and funding collaborators across cognitive science, adult education, machine learning, learning sciences, and related fields.

Technology should serve humanity.

We apply models to EKG and CT data, accounting and econometrics, forecasting, forestry, air quality, and other worthwhile problems — never to harm, threaten, target, or enable aggressive action.

We believe technical capability carries responsibility. We choose civilian work that supports health, knowledge, stewardship, sound decisions, and a better understanding of the world.
